Esteban Gutierrez is set to test for the Mercedes EQ Formula E team as the German manufacturer continues to assess drivers for its definitive 2019-20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship lineup.
Gutierrez is expected to run with the new team shortly and will join Stoffel Vandoorne, Gary Paffett and Edoardo Mortara in having driven the manufacturer development and test car.
Mercedes EQ has largely used the Circuito Ricardo Paletti at Varano in Italy for its testing apart from a brief shakedown at a German airfield in June.
The Gutierrez test, which is believed to be taking place imminently, will see the Mexican return to a Formula E car cockpit for the first time since he completed in five Formula E races for Techeetah in 2017.
“We are still evaluating different options regarding our driver line-up for the next season and Esteban is within the Mercedes family as a simulator and development driver for the F1 team,” Ian James, managing director of Mercedes-Benz Formula E Ltd., told e-racing365.
The 27-year-old scored five points from three races as teammate to Jean-Eric Vergne during the 2016-17 season.
Gutiérrez was initially scheduled to drive for Dragon but was dramatically swapped over to Techeetah, replacing Ma Qing Hua for the Mexico City, Monaco and Paris races before he himself was replaced by Stephane Sarrazin.
Formula E was instrumental in ensuring that Gutierrez raced in the championship with Alejandro Agag personally assisting the deal for the former Sauber and Haas F1 driver to race for Techeetah.
Since that time Gutierrez made several appearances for the Dale Coyne Racing IndyCar team in 2017 and also competed in the 2019 Race of Champions in Mexico City.
However, his main role has been as a simulator and development driver for the Mercedes-Benz F1 program.
Mercedes EQ Formula E team is set to announce its definitive squad and launch its new motorsport program at the IAA event in Frankfurt next month.
